Growth Group Questions (message from John 17:23)
1. How would you describe the kind of unity Jesus praying for in this verse? Or, what kind of
unity is “not” in view? Why does this matter?
This is not an organizational or structural unity, like a denomination or ecumenical
relationship. This is not an external unity of mere intellectual doctrinal assent. This is not a
unity that can be fully experienced in the present. This is a future, spiritual unity that will be
perfect in every way. It matters because it affects whether we think unity is something we
must work to bring about, or trust that the Lord will bring about.
2. What is the purpose of the unity Jesus speaks of here? Salvation or condemnation? How does
this glorify God?
Though not the most common view, it was presented in the sermon as not primarily an
evangelistic purpose, because it is aimed toward the unbelieving world on the day when
Christ returns. The purpose is to provide evidence for unbelievers to know who Jesus really
is and of the Father’s love for his people – which will condemn them. God is glorified either
way, either through salvation or condemnation, in the perfect exercise of his mercy or
justice.
3. Why is true Christian unity, even though it is imperfect now, so important?
It testifies to the goodness of God and the promises that he has made. It is an opportunity to
experiences something of those things, while also seeking opportunities to repent and reform
where we fall short in our unity.
4. How does the need for unity fit with the occasional need for correction and rebuke?
Our unity is based upon the truth about God and the Gospel. Any time those things are
distorted or rejected, true unity is not possible and those things must be corrected.
5. How can you express/practice/grow in true Christian unity? How can our church express
unity?
Keep growing in the knowledge of Scripture. Keep drawing near to God in prayer. Keep
gathering to worship the Lord. Keep seeking to obey his commandments. The closer we draw
to him, the closer we will draw to each other as a result.
6. How does the fact that the Father loves believers just as he loves his Son affect you?
Comfort in God’s love for you from before the foundation of the world. Praise for God’s love
at a moment in time, both in sending his Son to die for you and in bringing the Gospel to you
for your salvation. Assurance in knowing that God will continue to love you for eternity.
